Read more: Banks of the Mississippi is a digital edition of The Banks of the Mississippi, an historic place name published in 1817 by William Dunlap. (On our website, we recommend that you download the Kindle edition of the book in Kindle format.) This digital edition, including the entire text, illustrations, and all the media, is completely free to view, free to print, and free to distribute. In 2002, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers quietly issued a permit for the construction of a $1.2 billion, 80-foot-deep, 30-mile-long "road-like" tunnel across the bottom of the Mississippi River, at the request of a small cluster of environmentally minded wealthy Los Angeles citizens. Those "L.A. Punks," as they were called by some of the environmentalists, apparently didn't think the tunnel should be built; "Earth Day" activists, not so much. The general architecture is familiar: the "bottle" for the tunnel is a barge carrying a tractor that digs the tunnel, while the tunnels themselves are drilled by ships that perform the task via self-propelled "corkscrews" that fold in on themselves. The canal is lined with concrete on its entire length, making it look like a canal. Ongoing government studies of the project reveal that it may not be safe. The local government of Mississippi, for example, is considering the installation of floating monitors to test for possible leaks. So far, however, there has been no proof of a safety issue. Nevertheless, the Corps is spending $3 million a year for a company to test for tunnel leaks, because the leaks can be costly. The local economy, however, is being devastated by the loss of tourism and other related economic activity. One problem is that the tunnels aren't built perpendicular to the Mississippi's banks. They are built parallel. This allows the tunnel to collapse and leak if the banks erode. a5204a7ec7
